The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
